President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally written to the Senate, requesting legislative approval for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a peace-enforcement mission.
The request which was read at Senate during plenary on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, follows reports of an attempted coup in Benin, prompting and the need for swift stabilisation efforts.
In his letter, President Tinubu said the deployment is necessary to support the restoration of constitutional order and prevent further escalation that could threaten regional security.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the request, as Nigeria positions itself to play a leading role in maintaining peace within the West African sub-region.
